Alex Cuba is a rebel. “When it comes to creativity, I need to go to places I’ve never been before,” he says. With the wanderlust of a world traveler, the Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter explores new sonic spaces on Ruido En El Sistema / Static in the System. Following the compass points of rock, soul, pop, and Latin-funk on his fourth album, Cuba continues his journey as a critically acclaimed independent artist who’s charted his own destiny across the world stage while earning a growing legion of devoted listeners at each new juncture.

As rebels are often wont, Alex Cuba views his music as a liberating force. It’s a quality that’s transmitted through the artist’s songs and has made him a fascinating exception to the staid rules of category. He explains, “The purpose of my music is to free up people, to free up musicians, to free up writers and composers and creators in the world. That is the purpose of why I do music. Music, for me, is not one style. I’m not creating for one kind of people.” Armed with a Gibson ES355, Alex Cuba consistently challenges perceptions about what Latin music is, and who listens to it, by simply being himself.

A self-proclaimed “musical sponge,” Alex Cuba first learned the music of his native Artemisa, a city located just west of Havana. His father, a guitarist and music instructor, earned a Master’s degree in music at age 55 and remains a source of inspiration for the artist. Beyond sharing a natural affinity for music, the multi-instrumentalist Cuba learned the discipline of honing his musical talents from his father and later formed The Puentes Brothers with his brother. Citing influences that range from Kind of Blue by Miles Davis to The Beatles’ White Album, Cuba looked beyond the rich heritage of his homeland to develop his own singular style — one fueled by spontaneity, or what Cuba characterizes as the “tension of imperfection.”

2012 Twilight Concert Series Poster Contest

2012 Twilight Concert Series Poster Contest

The Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation is pleased to announce the 2012 Twilight Concert Series Poster Contest.  The winning design will become the official representation of the 28th Annual Twilight Concert Series, Santa Monica Pier’s free summer concert series which is attended by over 100,000 people each summer.

Please note:  The Series name has changed from “Twilight Dance Series” to “Twilight Concert Series.” The word “Dance” has been replaced with “Concert.”

The poster serves as the cornerstone of the advertising and public relations program each year and will become a collector’s item.  The poster winner will be chosen

via a secure Internet poll on Visitors will only be able to vote one time, for one poster.

All entries are due on Monday, April 16, 2012 by 5PM/PST.  Finalists will be selected and voting will take place during the month of April.

The poster’s aim is to inform the public about the Twilight Concert Series’ concert dates and performers, and to convey the spirit of the Twilight Concert Series as a culturally diverse, exciting and free community event.  A copy of last year’s winning poster is attached.

The design should contain elements that can be replicated across a variety of print and electronic media, from large posters and banners to tickets, invitations, and programs.

VERY IMPORTANT:  Design and copy (if used) should represent that the poster is for the 28th Annual Twilight Concert Series – how this is reflected in the art and/or copy is up to you.  PLEASE incorporate key Series information including the dates and performers for ten concerts into the design and leave space for the Series sponsors’ logos.  The dates, artist and sponsor information will not be available for the contest, so please feel free to improvise.

Design MUST be created using a professional graphic design software program such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.  If any element is drawn by hand and is scanned in, it must have the appropriate paths so a reasonably qualified graphic designer would be able to manipulate the elements as needed to create the Twilight Concert Series support materials listed above.

TCS Logo (attached) should be placed as a “header” (at top of poster).  Bottom of poster should be reserved for sponsor logos.  Your creative design should fill

the body of the poster, but needs to include: 28th Annual, Line-up Placement and “For More Information visit or call 310.458.8901.”

Design dimensions should be set to 11” x 17”.  Designs should be submitted on CD or Zip disk, in their original, pdf and jpeg formats (to insure that they can be opened.)  A color printout of the design on 8.5” x 11” paper must be included with the disk.  (Print need not be mounted or matted.)  Designs submitted without a hard copy can not be considered.

The winning artist will be required to assist agents of the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation in the preparation of the art for print and adapting it to other media as necessary.

Winner will receive a $750 cash prize and a VIP package for the concert series, as well as the thanks of a grateful Pier and envious looks from friends and colleagues who will glean up-to-date concert information from your poster design all summer long.

The decision of the judges will be final and binding on all entrants.  All material submitted becomes the property of the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation and will not be returned unless the entrant provides a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope.

Entries can not be accepted without the entry form at right.  Please give your work a unique title, note it along with your information on the entry form at right, cut out and securely attach the form to your print of the design.  Additional entry forms can be obtained by calling (310) 458-8901.

Entries must be received by 5 PM/PST on Monday, April 16, 2012.  Entries may be mailed to or dropped off at:
